Things That Go Wrong With Car Door Locks

The locks on your car doors offer security and provide an extra level of safety in the event of an accident or a deterrent to opportunistic thieves. However, there are many things that can go wrong with your car door locks!
The most basic system involves a standard lock that opens and closes with a key. These are still available in older car models and are easy to change or fix!
Manual locks require you to physically push a lever or pin on the inside of your automobile to lock and unlock. These are not as convenient as power locks, but they can be less expensive and easier to repair.

However, if your car door lock becomes damaged and doesn’t turn, it can be extremely difficult to open the doors without calling a professional. Fortunately, there are ways to fix this yourself using household items. A common technique involves using a coat hanger to help you open your car door. This method is easy enough to do in a pinch, and all you need is a thin wire coat hanger and pliers. First, tie a slip knot in the coat hanger and create a loop the size of your index finger on the end. Slide the loop into the upper right corner of your driver’s window and then wiggle it back and forth like you’re flossing a giant tooth.
For drivers who prefer not to have the extra worry of locking their car doors while driving, or if they are worried about leaving possessions in their cars, automatic locks are an excellent option. These locks activate via sensors installed on the door handle and send a signal to the control module to confirm the action was completed.
This type of lock usually offers two options: to switch the lock down to lock, or up to unlock. Auto careers professionals should be aware that if the door doesn’t respond to the click, then there is likely an issue with the door actuator, or the system that coordinates it.
These systems are often less complicated than the traditional manual locks and can be a great solution for absent-minded drivers who don’t want to have to search through their purses or pockets for keys while driving with children or groceries in the back of the vehicle. They also make it much harder for a thief to break into your car, and are very effective at protecting valuables and young children.
Keyless entry allows you to unlock your car without a physical key. It’s common on SUVs and sports cars, but it can also be found on cars of all shapes and sizes and prices.
With this system, your car emits radio signals that the fob looks for. When you approach your car, the signal sends a code to the door lock control module that identifies which door to unlock or secure.
When the door lock receives the right code, it activates a solenoid that pushes an actuator rod into the latch, releasing its jaws and opening the door. This process is much faster than traditional pin tumbler locks, and it’s also less likely to jam with ice or snow. Some keyless systems allow you to operate them via the fob’s touchscreen or a smartphone app, fingerprint scanner, z-wave smart home security touchpad, or voice assistant commands. These systems can also connect to your alarm or home automation system for even more functionality.
Electronic
Many newer cars have computer-operated electric door locks that offer additional convenience and security. These depend on a combination of an electronic sensor and internal magnets with a reversible switch. When the door handle is lifted, it sends a signal to the system’s actuator that activates the switch.
