How to Fix a Car Combination Switch

A car combination switch controls several functions important for your safety while driving, including turn signals, headlights, and wipers. If any of these are not working properly, it could lead to traffic tickets or even accidents. The best way to avoid this is to have the multifunction switch assembly replaced as soon as you notice any symptoms of malfunctioning.

The combination switch is an electronic switch assembly that controls several vehicle functions, most commonly the turn signals, high and low beam headlights, and wipers. It is usually mounted on the left side of the steering column where it is easily accessible to the driver. If you are experiencing problems with your turn signals, headlights, or wipers, the problem may be caused by a defective multifunction switch.

There are many different types of car switches that can be found in the vehicle, but the most popular one is a combination switch. This type of switch controls multiple car features at once, including the headlights and the turn signal. A combination switch is also known as a turn-signal-light-hazard-light (HSLH) switch because it controls both the hazard lights and the turn signals in a single unit.

A common cause for a broken HSLH switch is corrosion or contamination of the electrical contacts inside the switch. These contacts need to be clean to make a good connection with the wires that connect them to other components in the vehicle. The corrosion or contamination can be caused by dirt, dust, or moisture in the environment.

Another common cause for a faulty combination switch is wear and tear of the internal components that control the functions. These parts can be subject to stress when the switch is activated, which can cause them to break down over time. These components can include the switch actuator, which controls the position of the switch, the switch terminals, and the switch harness connectors.

To fix the problem, you can replace the entire switch assembly or just the individual switches. The former is the cheaper option, but it can be difficult to install, so you might want to consult a professional for help. The latter is more expensive but it offers more guarantees that the new switch will work correctly.

Before you start replacing the switch, it is a good idea to disconnect the battery. This is done by loosening the bolt that secures the negative cable to the terminal. After that, you can remove the old switch from the steering column by removing two screws. Once you have removed the switch, it is a good idea the clean any corrosion from the electrical contacts inside. This can be done by using a wire brush or a can of compressed air. After the contacts are clean, you can reinstall the switch. Remember to re-connect the battery before you start driving. Lastly, make sure the new switch is positioned correctly in the steering column.
